The slideshow showcases the different types of homes that residents can inhabit.

Most residential architecture in Cape Coral consists of a monoculture of detached homes which are typically bungalow's, which can be large or small. The few higher density areas within the area include low-rise apartment and condominium blocks.
The 2 biggest natural threats to a house in Florida are hurricanes and termites. It makes sense to choose materials resistant to wind, flying debris and hungry insects. Though there are many wood houses on pier and beam foundations, the most resilient ones have slab foundations, concrete block walls, low roof built using prefabricated trusses and concrete tile roofing. As many doors and windows are only built for 6″ exterior walls, the extra 3″ wall thickness can be used for mounting hurricane shutters of varying styles. Stucco siding outside and insulated wallboard inside completes the “Florida” look.
CONCRETE BLOCK VS ENGINEERED WOOD FRAME CONSTRUCTION
pros and cons
ENGINEERED WOOD FRAME

1. Meets building code wind requirements just like CMU homes.
2. Much more energy efficient due to having deep wall cavities for various types of insulation
3. Allows greater freedom in design for multiple wall heights, angles, curves and other detail at an affordable level
4. Improved moisture protection due to advancements in house wrapping products in the last several years
TYPICAL RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE
CONCRETE BLOCKS (CMU)

1. Better sound proofing
2. Durability during a hurricane
3. A "simple box" one-storey home could be less expensive than a wood frame
4. Some say CMU has a better fire rating however the roof and interior walls are still wood frame.
5. Better protection from termites.
6. Not as energy efficient as a wood framed home
7. Possible dampness in areas of the walls that can be trapped within
8. Higher cost on larger, high-end homes due to more complicated design elements
9. The block size dimension is wider than a 2x4 or 2x6 thus robbing a couple of inches from a room located on an
exterior wall area
10. Harder to rout mechanical rough-ins such as electrical and plumbing or retro-fitting wiring.
